Checkpoints When Buying a Vintage Kimono

Of course, it’s important to know your size when you go out and buy your first vintage kimono. But there are also few other things you should be attentive to: stains! Here are all checkpoints that won’t make you regret your purchase.

The first part you should check is the suso (裾) on the in and outside. After that make sure at the area around sode-guchi (袖口) is clean. The inner half of the sode (袖) is hardly visible, when you wear a kimono. Stains don’t really bother here.

Next part to look at is the eri (衿). There is often left over of make-up from the person who wore it last. After that you should make sure that the uwamae (上前) is clean. Last but not least: pay special attention on a clean neck and shoulder line as well as a stainless munamoto (胸元), painted red on the illustration.

The final checkpoints are the shoulder line on the back and the bottom half of ushiromigoro (後ろ身頃).

When you buy a nagoya obi, the most important parts to check are the taiko part and the one which ends up at showing in the front after having wrapped it around your body twice. If it is a point pattern nagoya obi it is easier to find those points. Just make sure that the point patterns are clean. Don’t forget to check the tare (たれ) part.

The same 3 checkpoints apply for fukuro obi (袋帯), too. However, they’re not so easy to find.

Hopefully you could understand what I was talking about, if not: make a comment! 🙂
